These are the locks on the Caribbean side of the Canal. There are four locks that are used to raise the boat 27.5 feet to the level of a central man-made lake. The lake was made by damming the Chagres River and provides a way for ships to cross the isthmus. The ship on the left is transiting from the Pacific to the Caribbean and is being dropped a comparable 27.5 feet.
